Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong (“HTHK”) deployed 5G base stations at container terminals under Hutchison Port Holdings Trust’s Hong Kong operations in 2020. This initiative led to the establishment of the first 5G-operated container terminals in Hong Kong, creating a robust foundation for smart port development.

Leveraging the ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency of the 5G golden spectrum, the container terminal has successfully implemented various smart applications. Raymond Ho, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of HTHKH, joined the launch ceremony to witness the launch of Hong Kong’s first fleet of electric autonomous trucks on 21 April 2026, alongside Liu Chun San, JP, Under Secretary for Transport & Logistics, and Ivor Chow, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports Holdings Trust and Managing Director of HIT.

3Business, the corporate brand of HTHK, conducted extensive network testing and fine-tuning earlier. This ensures that the autonomous trucks operate seamlessly within the terminal environment, marking one of the largest scale 5G smart applications in Hong Kong.

Moving forward, 3Business will explore the introduction of a 5G mmWave network at the container terminal, unlocking further possibilities for innovative smart port applications through even higher bandwidth services.
